Project Overview
Title sequence

title: Degrassi Title Sequence
Recreating a classic
The mission for this project was to recreate a title sequence from an existing show or movie, or even an original concept. The goal was to capture the tone and story of the show or movie through typography, making sure to include the title and at least three main credits. The project needed to be at least 60 seconds long, and hold the viewers attention while communicating all the necessary information.
The challenge
Going into this project, I still had the challenge of learning certain tools within After Effects, as this was only my second project using the application. Additionally, I had the task of creating something original while still capturing the essence of what the show of my choice is about and feels like. With composition, pacing, and type, I needed to find a way to communicate a message.
Process
Finding inspiration
The title sequence I chose to recreate is the introduction for Degrassi: Next Generation, specifically the season 9 version. Originally, this sequence is a video of the actual actors playing their characters, and shows them in different areas of the school they attend. For my version, I planned to rely on only typography and animations rather than videos. I put the intro song with the sound of children talking to get the video to 60 seconds, and began storyboarding. I intended to keep the school theme with hand written like typeface, school supply visuals such as notebooks and sticky notes, and using the Degrassi school colors for the color palette.

Reflection
Experimentation
After completing this project, I felt I had gone outside of my comfort zone and benefited from it. I gained experience with creating my own sources for masking photos, instead of using stock images I can find online. I was also able to learn more about how to make my type/illustrations appear like they're being actively drawn on the screen using tools like trim paths and boil. Overall, the sequence embodies the personality of Degrassi.
